Guide Review - Dell Inspiron XPS Gen 2
(7/26/05)Dell's Inspiron XPS Generation 2 is squarely targeted towards to PC gamer based upon its major features. First, there is the large 17 wide screen LCD that has an astonishing 1920x1200 resolution. The higher resolution allows for more detail when playing games. The second item is the NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra Go graphics processor that is the fastest available for notebook computers currently on the market. This allows the system to drive games up to such a high resolution.
But what about the rest of the computer? The base processor is a Pentium M 760 (2.0Ghz) that is great for battery life, but it does lag behind systems that use desktop processors for performance. It is matched up with high speed PC2-4200 DDR memory that helps boost its performance. The problem is the system only comes with 512MB and it is quite expensive to upgrade the memory.
Storage is quite disappointing on the Inspiron XPS2. The system only comes equipped with a 24x CD-RW combo drive. Most low cost notebooks even come equipped with DVD burners. The 60GB hard drive is fine for space, but the 4200rpm speed is a bit low for a performance system. Both of these are upgradeable, but it adds to the cost.
Overall, the Inspiron XPS Gen 2 is a very strong mobile PC gaming platform, but it comes at a very high cost. This really precludes the system from being recommended to anyone not planning on using it to play PC games.
