1/24/06 Dell's XPS M170 is powered by the Intel Pentium M 760 (2GHz) mobile processor that gives it good overall performance while providing good battery life. This is matched up with 1GB of PC2-4200 DDR memory that should let it run most applications without any slowdowns.
Storage is quite good for the XPS M170. The 60GB hard drive has a very fast 7200rpm spin rate that matches most drives used on desktop replacements. The faster speed does have the disadvantage of using a bit more power than slower spin rates. It also comes with a 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner that is standard on most desktop replacements.
Graphics wise the XPS M170 is quite good. The display uses a large 17 wide screen with a resolution of 1900x1200 display. This is a very high resolution display that may make it difficult to read for those with less than stellar eye sight. This is matched up with an NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 Ultra that provides very strong 3D graphics making it good for gaming.
One area that the XPS M170 could really use work is the price and software. It only comes standard with a Word Processing software. And this with one of the highest prices for a desktop replacement on the market. Also, it features the Windows XP Media Center operating system but it doesn't really have any features such as a TV tuner to take advantage of the extra features of the OS.
