Guide Review - Gateway M680XL

(7/27/05) – Gateway's M680XL is definitely one of the fastest desktop replacement notebooks on the market. It is powered by the Intel Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) processor, one of the fastest that Intel currently offers. This is matched up with one gigabyte of PC2-4300 DDR2 memory, double what most manufacturers offer on their systems. These combined help the Gateway M680XL power through applications at a speed similar to desktop PCs.

Storage on the M680XL is quite good. It uses a 100GB 5400rpm hard drive to provide a large amount of space without compromising disk speed. Added to this is an 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner that allows the M680XL to create data, video and music CDs and DVDs.

Graphics with the M680XL are very strong. The system uses a somewhat unusual WSXGA+ (1680x1050) resolution that is slightly higher than what most desktop replacements use. This is driven by a very powerful NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Go graphics processor with 256MB of memory. This is one step below the Ultra and still provides enough performance for high resolution PC gaming.

Another surprising aspect of the M680XL is its weight. Even with its fairly large dimensions, it is one of the lightest of the desktop replacements available on the market.

Overall, the Gateway M680XL performs extremely well in all aspects of computing, making it a great all around desktop replacement notebook.
