Guide Review - Gateway NX850XL
1/25/06 One of the first things you might notice about the Gateway NX850XL desktop replacement notebook is its size and weight. While most desktop replacements are pushing upwards of ten pounds and two inches think, the NX850XL is a paltry 7.7 lbs and only 1.4 thick. This makes it much more portable than competing notebooks.
The NX850XL is powered by the Intel Pentium M 770 (2.13GHz) processor that is the fastest currently available from Intel. This matched up with the 1GB of PC2-4200 DDR2 memory allow it to be extremely fast. The system should not have problems running pretty much any application.
Storage is quite strong for the NX850XL. A very large 100GB hard drives provides plenty of space for digital media files and its 5400rpm spin rate provides good performance. An included 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner allows the system to create music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.
Graphics wise the system is very good. The 17 wide screen LCD panel provides a very spacious 1680x1050 workspace that is great for graphics. The GeForce Go 6800 graphics processor is very capable for 3D graphics including PC gaming. It is a step below the new Go 7800 graphics though.
Gateway's NX850XL is one of those notebooks that features the Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system. What is odd is companies like Gateway putting this OS on a notebook such as this that lacks key multimedia features such as a TV tuner to take advantage of the features of the operating system.
