Guide Review - Gateway P-6831FX Gaming Desktop Replacement Laptop

1/24/08 – First off, there is a bit of confusion out there in the market on the display resolution. Some retailers state that the system has a WXGA or 1280x800 resolution but the system really has a WXGA+ or 1440x900 resolution screen.

Gateway has clearly targeted the P-6831FX at the gaming community and has succeeded quite well. It is probably the least expensive notebook on the market to feature the very powerful GeForce 8800M GTS graphics processor. This isn't quite top of the line but still provides very strong 3D graphics performance with Direct X 10 support. In order to provide it at this price, they had to make sacrifices.

Most companies have switched their product lineups to the newer Core 2 Duo T7000 and Peryn based processors, but the P-6831FX uses the older T5450 model. This provides decent performance but it does lack behind the newer models. To make up for this, Gateway has included 3GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory to let it run smoothly even with the Vista operating system.

Storage is very strong for the P-6831FX. Even though it uses a single drive setup, Gateway included a large 250GB 5400rpm drive that provides plenty of space. If users still need more, the notebook also provides an eSATA storage connector for higher performance external storage. The 8x dual layer DVD burner also features the Labelflash feature for burning labels directly to compatible media.

The biggest drawback to the P-6831FX is the case. It relies heavily upon glossy plastic shells that while attractive easily show scratches and smudges. This can make a quite attractive notebook design degrade fairly quickly. It also makes the notebook feel quite cheap in its build quality.
