(7/28/05) HP's Pavilion zd8220us is powered by the Intel Pentium 4 630 (3.0GHz) desktop processor. This provides the system with plenty of processing power and 64-bit OS support, but it does limit the amount of time it can run on the battery. This is matched up with 512MB of PC2-3200 DDR2 memory. It would have been nice to see HP include faster PC2-4200 memory to boost system performance.
Storage on the Pavilion zd8220us is little better than average for a desktop replacement. The 80GB hard drive is slightly larger than the average system but it does use a slower 4200rpm rotational speed. The 8x DVD+/-RW dual layer DVD supports all the latest media for recording DVDs and CDs. It even supports the new Lightscribe media for creating labels directly to the disc.
The Pavilion zd8220us really has some advantages in the multimedia capabilities. The 17 wide screen LCD is standard for most desktop replacements and the ATI Mobility X600 provides good 3D graphics ability sufficient for PC gaming. What really makes the system is the inclusion of a TV Tuner and the Windows XP Media Center operating system. These features let the Pavilion zd8220us really become a multimedia computer.
What makes the Pavilion zd8220us and other media desktop replacements so nice is that they can replace an entire entertainment center for a small apartment or dorm room. This is definitely a role that the Pavilion zd8220us can play quite well.
