Guide Review - Toshiba Qosmio F15
1/21/05 - Toshiba was the first major player to enter the portable market with a media center notebook PC and it definitely has made its mark. The Qosmio F15 is their mid-range media center desktop replacement notebook that has a lot to offer.
Powering the F15 is the high-end Pentium M 745 (1.8GHz) processor that gives it a lot of computing power while not drawing too heavily on the batteries. This is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory.
Storage is very good for the Qosmio F15. It comes with a 80gb hard drive which should come in handy for those looking to use its PVR capabilities. It also features a 8x DVD+/-R burner for recording programs to DVD for later viewing.
Graphics are fairly impressive. The F15 model is the mid-range model that features a 15.4" wide screen LCD. For the price, it would be nice to see it with a 17" rather than the 15.4" screen. The graphics are powered by the GeForceFX Go5700 which should be sufficient for most uses including 3D applications.
What sets the Qosmio apart from other multimedia notebooks is the ability to watch TV, DVDs or listen to CDs without the need to launching the operating system. This is what all media center PCs should be required to be able to do. The integrated TV and PVR software make this a very well rounded multimedia PC.
If there is one major fault with the Qosmio F15, it's the price. This system costs a lot for all the features it provides. Hopefully it will come down over time.
