1/17/07 – Toshiba's Qosmio line of multimedia notebooks were revolutionary when they were first released and they just keep getting better. The Qosmio G35-AV660 is a significant upgrade from the previous AV600 model. Practically every component of the system has been upgraded for improved performance. For example, the processor now features the new Core 2 Duo processor that provides 64-bit support and improved performance and the memory has been doubled to two gigabytes.
Since the primary purpose of the Qosmio notebooks is as a multimedia platform, a number of changes focus on the graphics and multimedia. The display has been increased to a 1920x1200 resolution to let the system support 1080p high definition content. This is important because another feature is a HD-DVD compatible drive. This lets it play the new high definition DVD format in all their glory. The HDMI connector will even allow the notebook to be a player for a fully sized HDTV although many may find the built-in LCD to provide better quality albeit in a smaller size.
Just as with previous Qosmio models, the G35-AV660 includes the built-in TV tuner to allow the system to be used as a stand-alone HTPC platform. It would have been nice to see Toshiba upgrade this to also include a terrestrial HDTV (DVB-T) tuner, but very few people do over the air HDTV. The upgraded hard drives provide a total of 240GB of space that should allow for plenty of space for recording your TV programs onto the system.
The old problems of the Qosmio line still exist with the G35-AV660. Most notable of these are the size and the cost. Expect to pay a lot more for the Qosmio over other desktop replacements and it weighing a lot more to pack in all the features.
