The Bottom Line

The Toshiba Satellite P25 series may have been groundbreaking, but the P25-S526 is just too bulky to make it very portable.

Guide Review - Toshiba Satellite P25-S526

7/22/04 - Toshiba was the first company to release a 17" wide screen notebook on the PC compatible market with the P25 series, but it has had a number of drawbacks. The Satellite P25-S526 is their latest desktop replacement notebook.

Powering the P25-S526 is the Intel Pentium 4 3.2 GHz desktop processor. This provides it with plenty of processing power for any computing task. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory. It would be nice to have faster PC3200 memory instead.

Storage is very impressive for the P25-S526. The notebook comes with a very large 80GB hard drive. It uses the very slow 4200rpm spin rate which reduces its performance though. The system does come with an impressive 4x multiformat DVD burner making it a good portable video editing platform.

Graphics continue to be displayed by the very large 17" wide screen LCD with 1440x900 resolution. It is hampered by the GeForce go5200 graphics processor. This provides capability for DirectX 9 graphics, but at very limited resolutions.

The problem with the Satellite P25-S526 continues to be its size. This is the largest and one of the heaviest desktop replacements on the market. It wasn't too much of a problem when they were the only one on the market with a 17" LCD, but now other companies are creating systems with just as large of a screen but in smaller dimensions.
