1/20/05 - Sony has been introducing a series of new notebook and desktop computers over the last few months, but a few of their older lines are still available. The Sony VAIO PCG-K33 is a desktop replacement line now being offered as their budget line of notebooks.
The VAIO PCG-K33 is powered by the Intel Pentium 4 532 (3.06GHz) desktop processor. While this isn't one of the newest processors available, it still has some fairly strong performance. The problem is that Sony has used a slower PC2100 DDR memory matched up to this processor. This could cause slowdowns with applications that are memory intensive.
Storage on the K33 is about average of what can be found in lower priced desktop replacements. It comes equipped with a 60GB hard drive that spins at a slower 4,200rpm speed. It also comes with a 24x CD-RW combo drive to allow playback of DVDs and recording of data or music CDs.
Graphics are below average for however. The 15.4" wide screen LCD display is a bit on the small side compared to many competitors, but it isn't uncommon for low cost systems. The problem is the integrated graphics solution. This prevents the system from really being used for any 3D performance applications such as games.
In the end, the Sony VAIO PCG-K33 may be lower priced than many desktop replacements, but the feature sets are severely lacking. It may have a faster processor than budget notebooks, but it doesn't have much more.
