Guide Review - Toshiba Satellite P100-S9772 Gaming Desktop Replacement
3/30/07 – Gaming on notebook computers has always been a bit of a challenge. The power and space limitations just don't allow for much in terms of the graphics department. Toshiba manages to pull off this by using the high-end GeForce Go 7900 GTX graphics processor with 512MB of memory. To add to this, they use a 17-inch LCD panel with a high resolution of 1680x1050.
Behind the graphics and display, Toshiba has thrown in a number of powerful components. An Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 dual core combined with two full gigabytes of PC2-5400 DDR2 memory prevent any bottlenecks in getting data to the graphics core. The 160GB hard drive provides plenty of space and reasonable performance thanks to its 5400rpm spin rate.
Rather than using the older Windows XP operating system, the Satellite P100-S9772 comes with the Vista Ultimate Edition installed. This provides all of the extra features from Microsoft that can be found in the regular and Enterprise editions plus a few extras. It would be nice to see them include some productivity software standard with it, but most gamers don't care about that.
In testing of the system, the unit was able to handle today's games at high resolutions with filtering enabled. The experience wasn't as smooth as would be hoped though and this is likely due to the driver support for such a new operating system. As the drivers are updated, the performance will almost certainly smooth out.
The real drawback to the Satellite P100-S9772 of course is the price. Its much higher than the average desktop replacement but thankfully is less than some of the prestige gaming systems from other manufacturers.
