1/21/05 - Toshiba was the first PC manufacturer to bring a large 17" LCD notebook to the marketplace. This wide format of display is becoming standard for most desktop replacement systems. They have continued to use it on their new Satellite P35-S629.
Powering the P35-S629 is the very powerful Intel Pentium 4 548 (3.33GHz) desktop processor. This should give the notebook a lot of power but can draw more heavily on the batteries. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that is standard for the desktop replacement segment.
Storage is a bit above average. The P35-S629 comes with a very large 100GB hard drive. It sacrifices speed for storage space as the drive on spins at a slow 4,200rpm. A 4x DVD+/-R burner is also included for creating video and data DVDs as well as CDs. To round out the storage, it also comes with a 5-in-1 media reader.
The P35-S629 continues to use this large 17" display and adds an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor. This processor can handle DirectX 9 tasks such as gaming, but the limited 64MB of video memory could cause some slowdown with some of the newer games.
Overall, the Toshiba Satellite P35-S629 is a very good desktop replacement notebook that will fulfill the needs of most consumers. It is one of the largest dimension notebooks on the market however. The problem is the Satellite series is now overshadowed by its multimedia counterpart the Qosmio.
