7/23/04 - Velocity Micro is a smaller systems integrator that makes a number of desktop PCs for the gaming and performance market. They also make some notebook computer systems including the NoteMagix S56 desktop replacement.
The NoteMagix S56 is powered by a somewhat dated Pentium 4 2.6GHz desktop processor. This isn't necessarily bad as it can run all of today's applications fairly well, but it is below average for the market. The system also comes with a base of 256MB of memory. While this is the PC3200 variety, it is also below average.
Storage on the notebook is average. Hard drive space is provided by a 40GB 5,400rpm hard drive while optical storage is provided through a 24x CD-RW combo drive.
Graphics are above average for the processing unit. It comes with a ATI Mobility 9700 Pro that should allow it to play all the latest OpenGL and DirectX games even up to moderately high resolutions. The problem is the notebook comes with a 15.1" SXGA+ screen. Most desktop replacements feature wide screen displays now.
Another feature that is suprisingly absent is wireless networking. With the proliferation of 802.11 wireless networks across the country, it is amazing that notebooks are still made without one form of it installed.
All in all, the NoteMagix system is not that bad, but its price really makes it a bit hard to recommend. It may be attractive to gamers thanks to its graphics processor but the other components are just a bit too below average for the cost.
