Guide Review - Voodoo PC Envy M:780
7/23/04 - Voodoo PC is a manufacturer that specializes in prestige and gaming systems. As such, their desktops and notebooks command a very high price. The Envy M:780 is their latest desktop replacement notebook system.
Powering the M:780 is an Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz desktop processor. While not the fastest CPU on the market, it should provide more than enough power for most users. Matched up to this is 512MB of low latency PC3200 DDR memory to provide the best performance available.
For such a high priced system, the storage is a bit of a mixed bag. The system comes with an excellent 4x DVD+/-RW burner. This provides the M:780 with the ability to burn full length DVDs at a fraction of the time of most desktop replacements. The hard drive storage is a bit more disappointing. The base system only comes with a 40GB 5,400rpm hard drive. It would be nice to see a 7,200rpm drive to provide more desktop like performance.
Graphics on the system are superb. The 17" LCD display has an amazing 1680x1050 resolution. This can make it quite difficult to read the text at times. It also features the latest ATI Mobility 9700 Pro with 256MB of memory. This should allow it to play the latest DirectX 9 and OpenGL games at high resolutions.
So do all these features merit the price of the Envy M:780? Probably not, but the Voodoo Envy M:780 offers a large amount of style and bragging rights for those that do own one.
