Guide Review - aMachines M6810

7/20/04 - EMachines made a bold move when they first introduced their M6800 series desktop replacements. It was the first portable computer system to feature the new 64-bit AMD Athlon processors. The M6810 is the latest from eMachines.

Powering the eMachines M6810 is the updated AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor. This gives a bit of a speed performance over the previous models. In fact, performance from the new processor is on par with many of the top of the line processor currently available. Matched up to this processor is 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory.

Storage is average on the M6810 for the desktop replacement segment. Hard disk space is provided by a 60GB drive. Optical storage is provided by the common 24x CD-RW Combo drives. This allows for the burning of CDs from the system while still allowing for the playback of DVD movies and data discs. Also included is a 6-in-1 media card reader for digital portable devices.

Graphics on the M6810 used to be first rate but have since slipped. It is still powered by the ATI Mobility 9600 with 64MB of memory. This allows for acceptable support of DirectX 9 based games, but the speed drops off quickly with higher resolutions. The 15.4" screen is large and nice, but it is smaller than most competing desktop replacements.

Overall the M6810 continues eMachines trend of performance but affordable systems. While not the top of the heap at any single category, it performs well in all applications at a very reasonable price.
