Guide Review - iBUYPOWER Battalion 101 LX-797 17-inch Desktop Replacement Laptop PC
Jan 26 2010 - iBUYPOWER's Battalion 101 LX-797 is based around the new MSI 1727 barebones laptop chassis that has been upgraded to use Intel's latest mobile processor lineup. Specifically, it uses the high performance Core i7 processor that feature quad cores standard. The base version uses the i7-720QM which provides a significant performance boost over the previous Core 2 processor lineups. This is especially true for very processor intensive tasks such as desktop video that really benefit from the extra processors.
While the general performance gets a major boost, the graphics system is a little less impressive. The 17-inch display uses a 16:10 aspect ratio and 1680x1050 resolution. This puts it below a full 1080p resolution for full HD video and is slightly less than the more common 1920x1080 resolution found on many similarly priced desktop replacements. The NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250M graphics provide a decent level of performance that makes the system capable of 3D gaming up the panels resolution but doesn't provide sufficient performance for extra filtering levels without lowering resolutions.
Storage on the Battalion 101 LX-797 is a bit disappointing in the basic configuration. It comes with a 250GB hard drive that uses the more traditional 5400rpm spin rate. Most of the competition has double this with 500GB drives and some also use faster 7200rpm spin rates. This means that the storage as a whole is less and slower. iBUYPOWER does offer a wide range of upgrades including larger and faster hard drives and even several solid state drive options. The system only comes with a dual-layer DVD burner even though many competitors are now offering Blu-ray compatible drives.
Overall, the Battalion 101 LX-797 offers some strong general performance with decent gaming capabilities. The problem is that with an almost $1500 base price tag, there are many other systems that either offer more storage, graphics or multimedia features. This makes it best suited as a general purpose system.
