The Bottom Line

Feb 14 2012 - The Zt Systems Affinity 7658Mi is a very solid choice for someone looking at a desktop system to be used for strong general computing performance. This is especially helped by the 16GB of DDR3 memory and the larger 2TB hard drive that is double what most companies provide in the $1000 price range. The main downsides to the system are the relatively low end graphics and limited upgrade potential. This makes it less suitable for someone wanting to also use the system for PC gaming. In addition to this, it is only available for Costco which means non-members will have to pay a bit more to get the system.

Pros

  • Double The RAM Of Most Similarly Priced Desktops
  • Large 2TB Hard Drive

Review - Zt Systems Affinity 7658Mi

Feb 14 2012 - Zt System's Affinity 7658Mi is sold through the Costco wholesaler. Pricing for members of the warehouse chain will be able to purchase the system for $950. Non-members can still purchase it but will have to pay an extra five percent over the member price which is almost the same as the cost of a membership.

Performance from the Zt Affinity 7658Mi is very good thanks to the Intel Core i7-2600 quad core processor. While there are now higher versions of the i7 available, this processor still does extremely well even in very demanding applications including desktop video. What is really surprising is that Zt Systems includes a full 16GB of DDR3 memory. This is nearly double what most desktops in this price range come with and means that the systems should run smoothly in Windows 7 even with a large number of applications open. It also means that buyers will likely never need to consider upgrading the memory after purchase.

While many companies have stuck with a 1TB hard drive for the majority of their desktop systems, likely from the increased costs from the flooding in Thailand during 2011, Zt Systems has decided to include a 2TB hard drive with the Affinity 7658Mi. This provides it with twice as much space as the competition for storing applications, data and media files. The downside to this is the drive is of the green variety that spins at a slower 5400rpm rate. With the increased data density, performance isn't impacted a huge amount but it is slightly slower than traditional 7200rpm 1TB drives. A standard dual layer DVD burner handles playback and recording of CD or DVD media. If you need additional storage space but don't want to crack open the case, the system does come with two USB 3.0 ports for use with high speed external storage.

Graphics for the Zt Affinity 7658Mi is handled by an AMD Radeon HD 6570 graphics card. This is a fairly low end graphics card that does offer some improved performance for non-3D applications such as Photoshop but provides very modest performance for 3D gaming. It is better served as a casual PC gaming graphics controller with lower resolution and detail levels. Those wanting to upgrade the graphics with a better card will find their options a bit restricted though. This is because the system comes with a relatively low 350 watt power supply. This means that only budget class video cards will be able to be installed.

Worst I Owned, Member SteveEstes03

This is by far the worst computer I have ever purchased. Did not even last 6 months before I started having problems. Then it took forever to get ahold of someone. After they did supposedly fix it, it was having the same problems within a week. By the time I could get ahold of them again they said the warranty was expired. I SPENT OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR THIS COMPUTER, DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER!!
