Guide Review - Compaq Presario SR1170NX
8/16/04 - Even though it has been some time since the merger of HP and Compaq, HP continues to offer the Compaq Presario line of computers. The SR1170NX is a ready to ship mainstream desktop personal computer system based around the Prescott version of the Intel Pentium 4.
With new technologies such as PCIe and DDR2 entering the market, the SR1170NX limits the users ability to do future upgrades. This is primarily due to its use of the AGP and DDR technologies. Upgrades will still be available, but they will be more limited as time passes.
The 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 processor should provide more than enough power for users to do most all tasks. The SR1170NX also comes with 512MB of PC3200 which has become the standard now for most new PCs.
Storage is where the Presario SR1170NX shines. The system comes with a very sizable 200GB hard drive to allow for a large amount of storage. It also features a 8x DVD+R/RW burner. It would be nice to see it be a multiformat drive that could handle -R/RW media as well, but HP is a major backer of the +R standards. Also included is a 9-in-1 media card reader for digital peripherals.
Graphics are a bit above average with a dedicated AGP graphics card using the NVIDIA 5200XT graphics processor. This is a DirectX 9 compability graphics card that will allow for 3D acceleration but at limited resolutions and features.
Overall the Compaq Presario SR1170NX is a very solid desktop that performs well for most users and excells for storage options.
