(8/17/04) - The 510S Pro is not much different from the standard 510S. The main difference is in the operating system supplied with the computer. The standard 510S uses Windows XP Home while the Pro version uses the Windows XP Professional OS that has more options and features than the home version. To keep the price the same, the Pro version also uses a slightly slower CPU.
The 510S Pro is powered by an Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor which is standard for the mainstream segment. Matched up to this is 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory. This should provide plenty of power for the average consumer.
Storage is pretty good for the 510S Pro. It comes standard with 120GB hard drive which should provide enough space for most users. It also features an 8x DVD+/-RW burner. Most desktop systems tend to also feature a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to supplement the burner, but Gateway does not include this standard.
Graphics are mediocre on the 510S Pro. The system uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics that lacks the power to do any real 3D graphics acceleration. Users have the option of adding an AGP graphics card though. It also comes standard with a 17" CRT monitor.
The 510 series does lack the latest technology of DDR2 or PCI-Express which can limit the ability to upgrade the system. The real advantage to the 510S Pro is the operating system that provides many improved features.
