2/18/05 - The Gateway 5200XL is the highest model in the 5200 series of desktop computers. This puts it in the upper price range for a mainstream desktop computer system, but it also packs a lot of features that are starting to be dropped by manufacturers in this category of computer.
The 5200XL is powered by an Intel Pentium 4 530 (3.0GHz, 1MB cache) processor that should have plenty of power for doing any form of application on a desktop system. It is matched up with 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory to allow it to run smoothly except for those very memory intensive applications.
Storage is quite strong with the 5200XL. It comes standard with a 200GB hard drive that is enough to store even large digital video files. It also comes equipped with a 16x DVD+/-RW burner for creating movies or data backups. Unlike most companies that include a second CD-ROM drive, Gateway has included a second 16x DVD-ROM instead.
Most manufacturers are now electing to use integrated graphics with mainstream desktop computers. These solutions lack the ability to do much 3D graphics needed for things like gaming. Gateway has included a ATI Radeon X300SE graphics card in the 5200XL. While still not extremely powerful for games, it still does a better job than the integrate solutions.
Overall, the Gateway 5200XL is a very capable system that can do just about anything a user might want. While not equal to performance desktops, it still is a notch above many mainstream PCs.
