Guide Review - Gateway DX310X

8/10/06 – While most companies have updated their mainstream desktop systems to use the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors, Gateway has yet to do so with the DX310X. The system is based around the fairly old Pentium D 805 processor. While it is a dual core system that improves multitasking, its slow speed leaves it far behind most mainstream systems for performance.

Thankfully storage on the DX310X isn't that far behind most mainstream desktops. The 250GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive is a fairly standard size that provides plenty of space for program and data storage. A 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner is included for reading or recording music, movie or data CDs and DVDs.

Most mainstream desktop computer systems include a dedicated graphics processor to offload the use of system memory and improved 3D graphics. Unfortunately, the DX310X does not use a dedicated processor instead favoring the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated that uses up 128MB of the 1GB of system memory. This severely limits its 3D capabilities. Gateway does provide the system with a sizable 19” LCD screen with the system.

So, what does the Gateway DX310X do well? Pricing is the thing that comes to mind. Those looking for a fairly decent general computing system with the potential for future upgrades to items like the graphics card, then the DX310X will probably work.
