3/21/07 – While Gateway continues to push more heavily into the retail with specific models, they still continue to sell a large number of computer systems through their web site. The Gateway DX430X on the surface appears to be very similar to what many companies are offering to the mainstream desktop market with a few twists.
The base specifications of the system seem to be what one would expect. It is driven by a Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 dual core processor that is matched up with one gigabyte of PC2-5400 DDR2 memory that should let it run without too much problem. In has been upgraded to include the Vista operating system over the previous Windows XP versions.
Storage is one area where the DX430X system falls behind many other mainstream systems. Most system come with either 250 or 320 GB hard drives for storage. The base DX430X system comes with a smaller 160GB desktop hard drive that does put a bit more of a limit on what users can store. They do supply it with a fairly standard 16x dual layer DVD burner.
Graphics are a bit more impressive, but also a let down at the same time. Gateway packages the DX430X with their very impressive 22-inch widescreen LCD monitor. This is a very well received monitor that is certainly something to consider when looking at the system. On the other hand, the system only comes with integrated graphics. Most mainstream systems come with at least some form of dedicated graphics at this point and the Intel GMA 950 will limit some of the capabilities of the new Aero interface.
This makes the DX430X something to look at more for a general purpose PC rather than one that might be used heavily for digital media or gaming.
