3/26/07 – HP has been heavily touting multimedia features in their newest desktop and mobile computer systems. The Pavilion m7760n adds in a fair number of these features into your standard tower desktop computer system.
The multimedia Pavilion platform is based around the new Vista Home Premium operating system that replaces the previous Windows XP Media Center. It retains all of the media features and adds a few more. To go with this, HP has included an analog and digital TV tuner to support traditional or HDTV over the air signals. This allows the system to be a content center for your multimedia collection and also act as a personal video recorder.
Putting all these media files into a computer can be problematic in terms of performance and storage. To address these issues, HP has put in a number of items to make sure it runs smoothly. The Intel Core Duo E6400 dual core processor really helps with the multitasking and the 2GB of memory lets Vista run smoothly. Storage isn't an issue as they include two 250GB hard drives for a total of 500GB of space, double what most mainstream desktops offer.
There is one big flaw in the Pavilion m7760n design though. With Vista and multimedia being such a prominent focus, its surprising that they only include an integrated graphics processor. Many companies are including dedicated graphics cards for use with the new Aero interface and for benefits to multimedia video. It would have been nice to see HP also include this.
All of this adds up to the HP being a great multimedia platform desktop, but if you aren't planning on using it as a digital video record, there are less expensive options available.
