The Bottom Line

Feb 12 2009 - The Poly i750SLI is kind of a mixed systems that doesn't really quite hit its target market. The SLI graphics would imply that it is designed for gamers, but the based dual GeForce 9500 GT graphics aren't that much better than a 9800 series single card. It also misses the market as a more general purpose system by using the Core 2 Duo processor rather than a quad core model. Still, it does come equipped with plenty of hard drive space for a system of this price.

Pros

  • Lots Of Disk Space Thanks to Three Drive Configuration
  • Swappable Hard Drive Tray Allows Easy Upgrade or Switch of Drives
  • Highly Customizable

Cons

  • Relatively Low Number of USB Ports
  • Graphics Would Be Better Off With Single Higher Speed Graphics Card

Description

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Dual Core Desktop Processor
  • 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2 Memory
  • Three 500GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drives
  • 20x DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner with LightScribe
  • Dual NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT Graphics Cards with 512MB in SLI Configuration
  • Intel HDA 7.1 Audio with Logitech S-120 Stereo Speakers
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • Six USB 2.0, Two FireWire
  • Vista Home Premium 64-bit

Guide Review - Polywell Computers Poly i750SLI Mainstream Desktop PC

Feb 12 2009 - Most people think of NVIDIA's SLI technology as something for PC gaming. It allows a desktop system to utilize two NVIDIA graphics cards for additional 3D performance. The Poly i750SLI makes use of this technology to put in two GeForce 9500 GT graphics cards. The problem here is that the two graphics cards aren't really any better than a single GeForce 9800 series card. Gamers would be better served by switching it to a single card configuration to so they can upgrade to a second card at a later time for additional performance.

Powering the Poly i750SLI is an Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 processors. This is a good and fast processor that works well for those who do not multitask or use multithreaded apps. That is fine for gaming, but since the system isn't the best suited towards gaming, the system probably would be better off with a quad core processor. At least the system comes with 4GB of DDR2 memory to let it run smoothly.

What the Poly i750SLI does extremely well is storage. The system comes equipped with three 500GB hard drives for more overall storage space than the average mainstream desktop system. It also includes a drive bay that allows for a standard SATA hard drive to be easily swapped in or out of the system. This makes it very easy to upgrade the system without opening up the case. A standard dual layer DVD burner handles all CD and DVD media. The burner also supports burning labels directly to LightScribe compatible media.

What really salvages the Poly i750SLI is the fact that it is highly customizable. Polywell offers a wide range of options on just about every component of the system. This would allow one to actually improve the system either for gaming or for general purposes. Of course, beware of running up the cost when customizing.
