Guide Review - Sony VAIO PCV-RS610

(8/19/04) - Sony has been making computer systems for some time, but often they seem to carry a high price tag compared to competitors. This seems to be changing with some of the more recent systems from Sony including the RS610 Digital Studio.

The VAIO RS610 system is powered by the Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor with 1MB of cache. This is an average level of processor for a mainstream desktop system. It is matched up with 512MB of PC3200 DDR memory to provide sufficient power for pretty much all computing tasks.

Storage on the RS610 is very good. It comes standard with a 160GB hard drive and a Sony multiformat 8x DVD burner. This allows the RS610 to work very well as a desktop video platform for those with directorial ambitions. Suprisingly, the RS610 lacks any media card slots including the Sony format Memory Stick.

Graphics are a bit lacking on the RS610 as it uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics. While it does have 3D graphics acceleration, it is not suited for any form of 3D gaming. Those seeking to use it for gaming would be advised to invest in an AGP graphics card.

The RS610 really shines for multimedia thanks to the Digital Software Suite from Sony. This integrated application handles things from music and movies. It also is designed to work well for those that have Sony digital electronics such as camcorders or digital music players.
