Guide Review - Velocity Micro Vector GX

8/16/06 – The Vector GX is based around the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor. This new processor provides an excellent all around performance including gaming, something lacking from the previous Pentium D line. The system comes standard with the E6300 model but upgrades to faster processors are possible. It is matched up with a full gigabyte of PC2-5300 DDR2 memory made by Corsair.

Storage for the Vector GX is provided by a Western Digital 250GB 7200rpm SATA hard drive that is average in size and performance for a mainstream desktop. Users have options for high capacity and multiple drive configurations. A LiteOn 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer DVD burner is provided for reading and recording music, movie and data CDs or DVDs.

One area that users will want to look at upgrading is the graphics. The system comes standard with the Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics. This has limited 3D capabilities, so those looking to play PC games should upgrade to a PCI-Express graphics card. Included with the system was a ViewSonic VA702b 17” LCD screen. This is a fairly fast screen but on the somewhat small side.

If there is one area that Velocity Micro could improve the Vector GX it is in the software. The system comes with a limited software package but users can choose to pay more for software upgrades such as productivity software.
