2/18/08 – The Velocity Micro Vector Z20 is certainly aimed at those consumers looking for a solid desktop system without the flashy high-end features that can quickly escalate the costs of a system. They offer a variety of low to mid range dual core Intel Core 2 Duo processors, but the best performance offering comes from the Core 2 Quad Q6600. This definitely helps for those that run a large number of applications at once or mulithreaded applications. The best part is that they use faster Corsair XMS PC2-6400 DDR2 memory compared to most companies that just offer PC2-5300 memory.
Storage options are much more limited on the Vector Z20 than other desktops. The system comes equipped with a fairly standard 320GB hard drive that will likely be enough for those that aren't too heavy on digital media usage. There is the option to upgrade to a 500GB drive but this isn't a huge jump and leaves it behind many other offerings. The Lite-On 20x dual layer DVD handles all CD and DVD recording and playback. There is an option for a Blu-ray drive but it adds a lot to the price.
Graphics are one are that really needs work with the Vector Z20. Instead of a dedicate graphics card, it ships with the Intel integrated graphics solution thus limiting its 3D applications. Several low end dedicate graphics cards can be added on, but once again it adds to the overall cost.
One of the best features though of the Velocity Micro system is the lifetime upgrade program. For a handling and processing fee, users can ship back their system to upgrade a wide variety of components so that they can update their system rather than having to completely buy a new PC.
