Guide Review - iBUYPOWER GS-925 Mainstream Desktop Personal Computer System
8/11/08 - The GS-925 from iBUYPOWER is a lower cost performance system that is designed for PC gamers. As such, it has a case that features things such as blue lighting and aggressive appearance. The thing that really matters is its performance and not its appearance.
Rather than a quad core processor, the GS-925 uses a higher clocked Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 dual core processor. This gives it stronger performance in single threaded applications such as most PC games than lower clocked quad core models. It also uses a self contained liquid cooling system rather than an air cooler that helps reduce noise and temperatures in the system.
The motherboard used for the GS-925 is a bit of an oddity. The ASUS P5KPL-CM board used in it is a microATX design that uses a very old G31 chipset. This really limits many of the features that the system has. For example, there is no FireWire support on the computer, even though the front of the case has a port. There are also limited internal expansion slots and there is no RAID drive controller.
Since the GS-925 is targeted at PC gamers, graphics are important. iBUYPOWER is hoping to sell the system based on the 1GB of memory on the GeForce 9600 GT graphics card. The problem is that this doesn't really give much of a performance advantage over a 512MB version. They would have been better putting in a higher grade card that had less memory. The motherboard also lacks any ability to add in a second card for an SLI configuration for added performance.
The overall result with the iBUYPOWER GS-925 is a PC gaming desktop that could have had better performance for gaming. It also does not stack up as well against similarly priced systems also designed for gaming.
