9/26/05 Even as more and more systems are starting to feature a full gigabyte of memory, applications such as desktop video and PC gaming can benefit greatly from a full two gigabytes of memory. Until recently though, very few options were available for high performance gigabyte memory modules.
Even though performance memory in 1GB modules is now available, the majority of the modules are still rated at PC3200 with very high latencies. OCZ Technology's Platinum series offers very low latencies in high capacities without the high cost. The Platinum EL PC3200 2GB kit can even be found for far less than the equally rated Gold EL series from OCZ.
Testing of the modules was conducted on the DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR motherboard and an AMD Athlon 3500+ processor. On the Everest memory benchmark, the OCZ Platinum EL PC3200 scores 5664 MB/s under the read and 2314 MB/s under the write tests. These are very strong numbers for a 2GB dual-channel kit.
Overclocking was a bit more disappointing. Even with trying to increase the voltage and using higher latencies, the best stable memory speed that could be achieved was 420MHz, a 5% speed increase. This is very disappointing as most OCZ performance memory can overclock fairly well.
Another bonus with the OCZ Platinum EL memory is the lifetime warranty that includes overclocking as long as the memory modules are run up to 2.8v. Most manufacturers have lifetime warranties but do not also cover modules that have been overclocked.
