The video card market has been plagued by paper launches over the past couple of years. This is a situation where the company announces a new product at an event and through press releases yet the product doesn't reach the actual market anywhere from three to six months after the announcement. NVIDIA thankfully has broken that trend with the release of the new G70 based graphics cards on the same day as their announcement.
The first product based on the new G70 graphics processor is the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX card. This PCI Express only graphics card is positioned at roughly the same status level as the previous Ultra name designation, but speculation exists that a lower end GT product and a possible Ultra version may also eventually be released.
The card that we are looking at comes from eVGA, a no frills manufacturer. Most of their cards closely follow the reference specifications from NVIDIA and lack many of the extras such as software packages or peripherals that other companies may offer. This helps eVGA to offer some of the better prices for the graphics cards.
