Guide Review - Dell XPS 700

6/19/06 – Dell's XPS 700 is an update to their top of the line gaming desktop computer system. Unlike many other prestige manufacturers, Dell offers a wide range of options for the components in the XPS 700 to fit the budgets of many different consumers.

Dell continues its tradition of using Intel based processors while most other companies have chosen to use AMD due to its gaming performance. This does put a little bit of a damper on the overall performance of the XPS 700 for gaming, but it is still respectable. The system also tends to perform a bit better in multimedia applications. The system comes with a large amount of PC2-5300 memory that should let it run pretty much everything.

Storage is quite strong with a wide variety of options for consumers. All versions come standard with at least a 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer DVD burner plus a secondary 16x DVD-ROM drive. Hard drives can come equipped with a single drive, a high performance RAID 0 cluster or even a very large capacity one and a half terabyte drive array.

Like most of the latest gaming systems, the XPS uses the latest NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 graphics cards. These provide two graphics processors on a single board to allow for extra performance. Dual 7950 GX2 cards are available for a four processor setup that allows for extremely high performance. Dell also offers their very highly rated wide screen LCD panels for purchase with the system.
