12/13/05 – Dell's XPS line of computers was originally geared towards gaming, but this focus has changed with the latest and expanded line of XPS systems. The Dimension XPS 600 is their top of the line computer that has lots to offer the PC gamer as well as the multimedia user.
While most performance systems are based on the AMD processors, Dell continues to use the Intel processors. In the case of the XPS 600, that includes the Intel 840 Extreme Edition, a dual core processor with very large cache that excels at multimedia even if it isn't the fastest for games. For those on a tighter budget other Pentium processors are available. It is matched up with PC2-4300 DDR2 memory.
Storage is quite good with a wide range of options. Every version comes equipped with at least a 16x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner and a 16x DVD-ROM. Hard drive storage can vary from a single drive all the way up to the two Hitachi Deskstar 500GB SATA 300 hard drives in a RAID 0 array for high capacity and performance.
Graphics wise the top of the line system can use twin GeForce 7800 GTX graphics cards in an SLI configuration, a first for a Dell system. This gives it exceptional 3D performance. Another benefit of Dell is the packages that come with the wide screen LCD monitors that have superb performance.
If there is one big disadvantage to Dell Dimension XPS 600 desktop, it is the case that has a lot of plastic on it compared to the aluminum and metal designs from other manufacturers.
