Guide Review - Falcon Northwest Talon 6.2

6/28/04 - Many users are put off by the high price of the gaming and performance desktop computers. Falcon Northwest tries to address these consumers with its Talon series of reduce cost sytems that are much lower in price, but also have fewer features and options.

The Talon 6.2 system is based around the AMD Athlon64 3200+ 64-bit processor. This isn't the fastest version of the processor, but it provides plenty of performance for today's games and has 64-bit software support for the future. It is matched up with 1GB of PC3200 DDR memory.

Storage is a bit more limited on the Talon 6.2 than some system. It only comes with a single 120GB SerialATA hard drive that won't match the performance of RAID0 arrays. They do make up for this by including a 8x DVD+/-RW burner and 16x DVD-ROM drive.

Graphics are handled by an NVIDIA GeForceFX 5950 Ultra graphics cards. While this is the latest and greatest graphics card, it still provides plenty of performance to play all the current DirectX 9 games at high frame rates. Audio on the other hand is very disappointing. It uses the integrated AC'97 audio solution and does not come with speakers.

Overall, the Talon 6.2 system isn't a bad system, but it doesn't have the same level of components, features or style as many high priced performance system. Those who aren't afraid to piece together their own system could probably build a system with higher performance than what comes in the Talon 6.2
