6/29/04 - Polywell is one of the lesser known system integrators, but they have a lot to offer consumers. The Polywell Poly 939VF is one of their latest desktops built around the new Socket 939 AMD Athlon64 processors. The FX53 model ships with the top of the line Athlon64 FX-53 processor.
While the 939VF-FX53 is based around the very high end processor, Polywell is still trying to keep the costs down to make it affordable. They use 1GB of PC3200 Dual Channel DDR memory for performance, so overclocking is not really an option.
Storage is one area where the 939VF-FX53 really shines. It uses two of the Western Digital Raptor II 10,000rpm Serial ATA hard drives in a RAID0 array to give the best performance possible. Optical storage is provided by a Sony 8x multiformat DVD burner.
Graphics are a bit on the lower end to help reduce costs. The system uses a capable GeForceFX 5900XT processor that should do fine for most DirectX 9 based games, but don't expect the same frame rates as the latest generation of graphics cards. They do include a 19" CRT monitor which is left out of most other performance systems.
Audio is also a bit disappointing. It uses the RealTek AC'97 integrated audio which supports surround sound, but doesn't have the best of audio quality. A small 2.1 speaker set from LabTec is included as well.
In the end, the Polywell Poly 939VF-FX53 is a good performance system with a few areas that could use improvement, but at least it won't break the bank.
