The Bottom Line
12/17/08 - The Poly X5800i is unique amoung performance gaming systems because of the inclusion and use of the extremely fast Seagate Serial Attached SCSI hard drives. This makes it one of the fastest systems for reading or writing data with the trade off of limited storage space. This combined with the Radeon HD 4850 CrossFire configuration make it very capable for PC gaming. Its too bad that this pushes the system to be more expensive than many competing gaming desktops.

Guide Review - Polywell Poly X5800i Performance Gaming Desktop PC

12/17/08 - Polywell's Poly X5800i utilizes the new Intel Core i7 920 quad core processor with its integrated DDR3 memory controller. This combined with the triple channel 3GB of higher speed PC3-10600 DDR3 memory allow the system to power through most tasks without too much problem.

The most unique aspect of the Poly X5800i is the use of a separate Serial Attached SCSI controller and dual Seagate Cheetah SAS hard drives. These are some of the fastest drives available on the market spinning at an amazing 15,000rpms. That is double the speed of traditional desktop drives. This gives the Poly X5800i some of the fastest access and data transfer times available on the market and something that won't be found in traditional gaming desktops. The downside to this is that it adds a lot of cost to the system and provides a lot less overall storage space than using traditional SATA drives. Of course, users can always elect to use some standard SATA drives.

For the graphics, Polywell has elected to use two ATI Radeon HD 4850 based graphics cards with 512MB memory in a CrossFire configuration. This allows the system to function at smoother frame rates in certain games at higher resolutions or with additional filtering enabled. This is a step up from most companies just offering a single ATI or NVIDIA graphics card that typically fall in the middle range of products.

While Polywell does offer a variety of customization options to let users tailor the machine to what they wish to have, the Polywell X5800i ends up being above average in cost. Much of this has to do with the more performance related storage options that can be adjusted, but even then the price is on the higher side.
