Guide Review - Velocity Micro Raptor 64 DualX

6/21/06 – The Raptor 64 DualX is Velocity Micro's top of the line performance gaming desktop system. While it tries to keep up with the latest technology, the current model is starting to fall behind in a couple of areas.

Powering the Raptor 64 DualX is the extremely powerful AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 dual core processor. This is currently the best CPU available for PC gaming and does extremely well with general purpose computing as well. This is matched up with 2GB of low latency PC2-6400 DDR2 memory from Mushkin to allow the system to run smoothly.

Storage is quite good for the Raptor 64 DualX. They have kept up to date by including the new Seagate 750GB SATA drives in a RAID0 array to provide over a full terabyte of storage space. This is probably way more space that an individual will need for many years to come. They have also included the top of the line Plextor PX-760A 18x DVD+/-RW dual layer burner for optical duties.

Graphics are key to performance systems and this is where the Raptor 64 DualX needs some updating. Even with the release of the new GeForce 7950 GX2 cards, the system is only available with two GeForce 7900 GTX cards. This still provides very strong high resolution 3D performance but can't compare to having two GeForce 7950's for a total of four graphics processors.

Putting a damper on all this is the price. For a similar price, consumers can find systems featuring the latest quad graphics setups.
