Guide Review - Velocity Micro Raptor Special Edition

6/30/04 - The Velocity Micro Raptor Special Edition foregoes the new Intel Socket T platform that provides the new DDR2 and PCI-Express technologies for the tested i875P platform. This sets the Raptor SE apart from other Intel based performance desktop systems.

Powering the Raptor SE is the Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition. This is a processor that features a 2MB cache for increased performance, but it also adds a lot to the price. It is matched up with 1GB of dual channel PC3200 memory from Mushkin.

Hard drive storage space is phenomenal on the Raptor SE. Not only does it include a two drive Western Digital Raptor II 74GB SerialATA RAID0 array, but it also comes with an additional 250GB ATA hard drive for a total of nearly 400GB. Optical storage is handled by a Lite-On 52x CD-RW burner and 16x DVD-ROM. It would be nice, especially for the price, to see a DVD burner included.

Graphics are powered by the latest Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition graphics card. This top of the line graphics card provides more than enough power for current and future DirectX 9 and OpenGL games. The system does lack a monitor.

Overall, the performance of the Raptor SE is very strong. It does lack a number of items and features, but that isn't uncommon in this price segment. The big problem is that it has to compete with the Raptor 64 SE that provides equal or better performance but costs less.
