12/23/04 - Voodoo has been a big name in the prestige market of selling custom designed desktop computers. They offer a lot of style in their designs, but also want to offer a good amount of performance. Their latest system is the new Rage Sli based around the new NVIDIA chipsets.
Power for the base Rage SLi is below average for a performance system. While the AMD Athlon 64 3500+ is still a very strong processor, many competing systems offer faster processors for equivalent or lower prices. The system is matched up with 1GB of dual channel Crucial Ballistix PC3200 DDR memory.
Storage is also awfully weak for the price of the system. A standard 80GB SATA hard drive makes up the base of the storage. It would be nice to see either a larger hard drive or a RAID0 array to provide additional performance. The base system also only comes with a standard LiteOn 16x DVD-ROM drive.
Graphics are the key to any gaming system and the Rage SLi offers the new NVIDIA chipset that supports SLI. The advantage is that two cards can work together to render thus improving performance. Voodoo has opted to use the NVIDIA mid-range GeForce 6600GT cards for the system. While this is an improvement, performance is still generally not that much greater than a single GeForce 6800Ultra.
In the end, the Voodoo Rage SLi is a system that offers a lot of style, but it lacks much of a substance to back it up. Performance is good, but can't compare to many equivalently priced competitor systems.
