Guide Review - Falcon Northwest FragBox II

2/23/07 – Falcon Northwest designed the FragBox as a mobile gaming platform. The goal of this system is performance and in particular 3D graphics. The original FragBox was based around the AMD Athlon processor line, which at the time was the fastest. Since then, Intel released the Core 2 Duo and took back the performance crown. The new FragBox II still uses much of the same base components but instead uses the new Core 2 Duo E6300 as its base. This provides it with the best performance possible for PC gaming with options for higher processor models for those will to pay for the upgrades.

Since this is designed as a mobile gaming platform, the FragBox II uses the new GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB graphics card. Even though it doesn't have as much memory as the original GTS card, the performance levels are still extremely fast and more than adequate for most LCD monitors that would be hauled around with the FragBox II.

All of the components that Falcon Northwest uses for the FragBox II are from top quality companies. They use Corsair for memory, Western Digital for hard drives and Lite-On for optical storage. Each of these components are likely to be ones chosen by someone looking for high performance in a system they build themselves.

Rounding out of the FragBox II is the new Vista Ultimate Edition operating system that provides many of the base applications that one might ever need. It is too bad that Falcon Northwest doesn't include addition office or security applications with the system.

The big problem with the FragBox II though is the price. The sheer cost of the FragBox II easily surpasses the cost of a similarly equipped small form factor that could be built from scratch by the consumer.
