Guide Review - Sony VAIO VGC-LS1
9/19/06 – Sony's VAIO LS1 is their latest all-in-one computer system that features a full computer system built into the monitor, and it really is full featured. Powering the system is the Intel Core Duo T2400 mobile processor. While not the fastest processors around, it is still a good overall processor selection. One of the surprising aspects to the LS1 is the inclusion of a full 2GB of memory that should let it run just about any program without problems.
Storage is typically an issue with many smaller computer systems. Sony has opted to use a desktop sized hard drive over the smaller notebook drives. This adds to the bulk of the monitor but also allows for a 250GB storage capacity, something that is quite useful with the integrated TV tuner and DVR capabilities. An 8x DVD+/-RW burner is included for watching DVD movies or even burning your own video creations.
One of the items that sets the VAIO LS1 apart from other systems is the 19” wide screen LCD panel with a fairly high 1680x1050 resolution. The screen is quite bright and readable even with its high resolution and is excellent for watching TV or DVD movies. It is a bit of a letdown to have the system only use the integrated Intel GMA 950 graphics that limits its 3D graphics capabilities.
The LS1 is clearly a step above most all-in-one PCs that would be at home in a dorm room or a bedroom.
