The Bottom Line

May 5 2010 - The ASUS G51Jx-X1 offers a surprising level of performance for its $1200 price tag. Those hoping to use it for gaming will be pleased with its high performance Core i7 quad core processor, GeForce GTS 360M graphics and high resolution LCD panel. Those using it for processor intensive computing would also be well served by its performance. On the downside, the system has a small battery providing very short running times and is among one of the larger and heavier 15-inch laptops on the market.

Guide Review - ASUS G51Jx-X1 15.6-inch Thin And Light Laptop PC

May 5 2010 -

May 5 2010 - ASUS has been developing a number of affordable gaming laptops for some time and the G51Jx-X1 is their latest version. Performance has received a major boost thanks to the Intel Core i7-720QM quad core mobile processor. The four processor cores will certainly help for those looking to do multi-processor intensive tasks but its benefits for most games are more subtle. The 4GB of DDR3 memory should allow the system run smoothly between applications.

Storage features for the most part are pretty typical for a performance oriented 15-inch laptop. The 500GB hard drive provides ample space for applications and data files. The drive does spin at a faster 7200rpm rate that is more typical of desktop drives. This provides it with faster data access times but still falls short of what much more expensive solid state drives can achieve. A standard dual layer DVD burner handles playback and recording of CDs and DVDs.

The primary purpose of the ASUS G51Jx-X1 is an affordable high performance gaming platform and as such the graphics are a key feature. The 15.6-inch display offers a very high 1920x1080 resolution with bright colors and good viewing angles. Driving the graphics is an NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M graphics processor with 1GB of memory that should allow playing most PC games up to the full panel resolution. Some more intensive games may require lower resolution settings for smooth graphics. The only downside is that NVIDIA has not included Direct X 11 support into their mobile parts yet like ATI has with the Radeon HD 5000 series.

With all the high performance features of the ASUS G51Jx-X1, power requirements are quite high. ASUS only ships a six-cell battery pack with this version that severely limits the battery running time. In my DVD playback tests, the system was only able to run roughly one and a half hours before going into standby mode. This is well below what most similarly priced 15-inch laptops can achieve. Gaming on the system will likely result in a running time of just one hour and more typical web use might be able to stretch it to two hours.

A big issue with the ASUS G51Jx-X1 is the amount of applications that come preloaded on the system. Many gamers like to keep applications running to a minimum to get the most performance they can from their system. ASUS has installed a large number of utilities and programs that clutter up the desktop and drive that they will want to remove.

One nice addition to the ASUS G51Jx-X! is the warranty. Most laptop computers typically only come with a standard one year warranty from the manufacturer. ASUS has doubled this with the system provide two full years of support which is a very welcome addition consider how much users will potentially stress it for PC gaming.
