Guide Review - Acer Ferrari 3400LMi
11/15/04 - The Acer Ferrari line of notebooks is a collaboration between computer manufacturer and car maker. The combination provides a very stylish red notebook computer that offers a lot of performance.
The heart of the updated Acer Ferrari 3400LMi is the AMD Mobile Athlon 64 3000+. This is a mobile version of the desktop Athlon 64 processor that provides a lot of performance but in a more power minded package. Matched up to this is 512MB of PC2700 DDR that should let it power through pretty much any application thrown at it.
Storage is also quite exceptional. The 3400LMi comes standard with a multiformat 4x DVD burner for recording and playback of both CDs and DVDs. Internal storage is strong with a very sizable 80GB hard drive. To round of the storage, Acer also included a 4-in-1 media card reader.
What sets the Acer Ferrari a part from most thin and light notebooks is the graphics. Acer has decided to use the ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 with 128MB of memory. This provides the 3400LMi with enough power to play even the most current of DirectX 9 games without much problem. The 15 SXGA+ screen also provides are large amount of desktop space for programs.
The Acer Ferrari isn't without its flaws. The software package is very limited and the price is well above average. While the 3400LMi is significantly higher than most thin and light notebooks it packs almost as much power as a full size desktop into a very portable package that can't be beat.
