11/14/05 Acer's Ferrari line of notebooks were distinguished with their red color, but has changed with the new 4005WLMi model. The system is constructed using carbon fiber with a plastic resin that gives it a very distinctive look that still stands out.
Powering the Ferrari 4005WLMi is the new AMD Turion 64 ML-37 processor. This is AMD's mobile specific processor that provides a 64-bit processor capable of very strong performance yet still being fairly limited on power consumption. It is matched up with 1GB of memory to let it power through most applications without any problems. It would be nice to see Acer use PC3200 memory in place of the slower PC2700.
Storage is quite impressive on the 4005WLMi. The 100GB hard drive provides plenty of space to store a variety of digital files. In case the system runs out of space, a 8x DVD+/-RW burner is available to create movie, music or data CDs or DVDs. A 5-in-1 media card reader is also included for using flash cards from digital peripherals.
The multimedia is where the 4005WLMi really stands out. The 15.4 wide screen LCD has an impressive 1680x1050 resolution allowing for a large work space. It is powered by an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 graphics processor that lets is also run the latest PC Games with good resolution and quality settings.
The biggest detractor for the Acer Ferrari 4005 WLMi is the price. It is significantly higher than most thin and light systems, but the power and performance are worth the cost.
