Guide Review - Averatec 6210

11/15/04 - Averatec made its name in the PC world by develop low cost ultraportable notebook computers. They have since branched out into large models that offer more features than their ultraportable models. The AV6210 is a thin and light notebook that they have called a mobile theater.

Powering the 6210 model is the AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ processor. While this is a capable processor for most people, it is one of the older mobile CPUs from AMD. This is probably the primary reason for the lower cost of the AV6210. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that should let it run most applications smoothly.

Storage on the AV6210 is quite good for the price of the machine. While it does feature a fairly standard 60GB hard drive for a thin and light unit, it does surprisingly include a multiformat DVD burner, something typically only found on much more expensive units.

Since the AV6210 is dubbed a mobile theater, graphics should be an important part of the unit. The 15.4" wide screen LCD is certainly large enough to make it an excellent platform for watching DVDs. However, its graphics suffer as do many sub-desktop replacement notebooks by using an integrated SIS M741 video processor. This limits its 3D capabilities heavily.

While the AV6210 does sport 4 USB 2.0 ports for lots of expansion possibilities, it does lack a FireWire port for possible video work. This doesn't deter from the overall package that the Averatec 6210 provides for its amazingly low price.
