Guide Review - HP Compaq Presario V5160US

5/22/06 – While many notebook systems are now shipping with a full gigabyte of memory, HP Compaq has put together the Presario V5160US to come with a total of 2GB of system memory. While this does have tangible effects for memory intensive applications, the memory only runs at the PC2700 DDR speeds, slower than many competing systems. Similarly, it comes with an AMD Turion 64 ML-34 processor that is the lowest speed model available.

Storage wise, the Presario V5160US is pretty good. A 100GB hard drive is included that provides plenty of space. The drive spins at a slower 4200rpm speed that does decrease performance somewhat. The DVD burner supports the latest dual layer media as well as Lightscribe media for burning labels directly to the disc.

Graphics wise, the system is about average. It uses an integrated ATI Radeon Mobility X200M chipset that shares 128MB of system memory, not that this is much of a problem with the systems overall memory. It does lack the overall performance for 3D applications such as gaming or Vista's upcoming Aero inteface.

One thing that is strong with V5160US is the software. The system comes standard with Windows XP Professional. This is a solid step up from the Home version software. It also features a variety of productivity, security and multimedia applications.
