11/16/04 - One of the biggest trends in notebooks is to include wide screen LCD panels to make them better for watching DVDs. This makes the units larger and a bit more difficult to carry. Dell's Inspiron 700m used a smaller wide screen design and ends up being a much more portable notebook.
Powering the Inspiron 700m is the Intel Pentium M 725 (1.6GHz) CPU. This is a good balance of performance and battery life in the package. It is matched up with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory that allows it to run almost all applications smoothly.
Storage on the Inspiron 700m is a bit below average. It only comes standard with a smaller 40GB hard drive and an very common 24x CD-RW combo drive. As with all Dell computer systems, these specifications can change based on promotions or user upgrades at the time of purchase.
Graphics on the Inspiron 700m are different than many new thin and light notebooks. The unit uses a much smaller 12.1" wide screen LCD. This is larger than panels found in ultraportables but also much smaller than other thin and light notebooks. It uses the Intel Extreme 2 integrated graphics that limits is 3D performance severely.
Its size is where the Inspiron 700m's biggest advantage lays. It has very small dimensions compared to most thin and light notebooks but it still has more power than traditional ultraportables. This makes the Dell Inspiron 700m best suited for those who need a portable machine but still a decent amount of performance.
