Guide Review - Falcon Northwest FragBook TL-2

11/9/06 – For being a company that prides itself in making high end gamings systems, its surprising to see the FragBook TL-2 still using an older AMD Turion 64 single core processor rather than the new X2 dual core mobile processors. When they then only include a single gigabyte of memory with this, one has to wonder why the system is so expensive.

Storage wise, Falcon Northwest is looking for performance over capacity. The system comes with a Hitachi 60GB hard drive that is smaller than the average thin and light but it does spin at the desktop 7200rpm speed that boosts performance. A dual layer multiformat DVD burner is included for playing and recording CD and DVD media.

Another surprise with the FragBook TL-2 is the screen. The 15.4” LCD screen is a good size, but most companies tend to put higher resolution panels for systems geared towards gaming. The system does come with an ATI Radeon Mobility X700 graphics processor that provides strong 3D acceleration for applications such as games.

One of the key factors in the price may be the inclusion of the Windows Vista Business Edition upgrade for the FragBook TL-2 once the OS is released. Falcon Northwest also includes a customized carry case with the system that definitely sets it apart from traditional thin and light notebooks.
