The Bottom Line
The HP Compaq Presario X1460us keeps alive the X1000 series of thin and light notebooks as a viable alternative to larger portable computers even if it lacks some of the features found in previous models.

Guide Review - HP Compaq Presario X1460us

11/16/04 - Compaq used to be one of the top players in the thin and light notebook category with its Presario X1000 computers, but since the downsizing of features on the models it also has lost some of its luster.

Powering the HP Compaq Presario X1460us is the Pentium M 705 (1.5GHz) processor. While this is a very good processor for battery life, it is one of the slowest of the current generation of Pentium M processors. This puts the X1460us a bit behind others but still quite capable. This is matched with 512MB of PC2700 DDR memory.

Storage is a bit above average thanks to the sizable 80GB internal hard drive. Optical storage is with the new baseline for all notebook computers, a 24x CD-RW combo drive that can record CDs and play back DVDs.

One of the key features of the X series of notebooks when they were first released was the wise screen LCD display. This continues on the X1460US with the same 15.4" display. Unlike previous generations of Presario X1000 models, the X1460us has dropped the dedicated graphics processor in favor of the Intel Extreme 2 integrated processor. This severely limits the X1460us in 3D applications.

Another area where the Compaq Presario machines shines is the software bundle. The X1460us comes with pretty much all the applications a user might need preinstalled.

Overall the HP Compaq Presario X1460us is still a fairly strong machine, it just lacks the overall dominance that was held by previous models such as the X1010.
