Guide Review - HP Pavilion dv1440us

11/16/05 – HP has a large selection of thin and light notebooks that fit a wide range of functions. The HP Pavilion dv1440us looks to provide performance in a package smaller than the average thin and light notebook.

Powering the dv1440us is a very strong Pentium M 760 (2.0GHz) processor. This lets the system perform very well in processor intensive applications but still provides good battery life HP has included a full gigabyte of memory that lets it run even memory intensive applications without much problem. The only drawback is the system uses slower PC2700 DDR that does hold it back a bit.

Storage is overall very strong. A very large 100GB hard drive provides plenty of space for digital files and applications. The drive does spin at a slower 4200rpm speed that can limit its performance compared to the 5400rpm drives starting to be used prominently. The 8X DVD+/-RW drive also supports dual layered media allowing it to read and record music, movie and data CDs or DVDs. The 6-in-1 media card reader allows it to use a larger number of media cards than most thin and light notebooks.

Instead of the more prevalent 15.4” wide screen display, the dv1440us uses a slightly smaller 14” wide screen that allows the system to be more compact. It does rely on the integrated Intel GMA 900 graphics limiting its ability to do much 3D applications such as gaming.

HP's dv1440us is a good mix of performance and storage capabilities that comes in a portable package.
