Guide Review - HP Pavilion dv4040us

5/25/05 – The ability to watch a DVD movie without booting into the OS seems to be the latest trend for notebook computers, and this is one of the features that sets the HP Pavilion dv4040us apart from other thin and light notebooks.

The Pavilion dv4040us is powered by the Pentium M 740 processor. This is a fairly strong processor that uses the faster 533MHz bus that should have no problems with most applications. It comes with an amazing 1GB of system memory that should help with memory intensive tasks such as digital video. It would be nice to see HP use faster memory to match the system bus.

Storage is surprisingly good with a very large 100GB hard drive. The sacrifice for this large hard drive is a slower 4200rpm rotational speed that reduces the drives overall performance. Included are a dual format DVD burner that allows users to create music, movie and data DVDs or CDs and a 6-in-1 media reader for connecting digital peripheral flash cards.

Graphics are typical of the thin and light notebook segment. It comes with a 15.4” wide screen LCD. It also uses the new Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics. It shares up to 128MB of system memory but it isn't a problem with the gigabyte of RAM. It does lack the power of the dedicated processor for 3D accelerated applications.

Overall, the Pavilion dv4040us is a good selection for those who need storage space and memory. The specifications make it a good choice for those looking at doing digital video work.
